Common questions about kitchen renovation costs in the UK.
A new kitchen in the UK costs between £5,000 and £25,000+ depending on size and specification. A small fitted kitchen (supply and fit, laminate worktops) starts around £5,000–£9,000. A medium kitchen with quartz worktops costs £10,000–£17,000. A large open-plan kitchen with premium appliances and stone worktops can reach £20,000–£35,000+. Labour typically accounts for 30–40% of the total.
Supply-and-fit means the kitchen fitter sources and supplies all units, worktops, handles and hardware — you just choose the style and colour. This is more convenient but typically costs 30–50% more than fit-only. Fit-only means you purchase the units yourself (from IKEA, Howdens, Wickes, etc.) and the fitter assembles and installs them. Fit-only is cheaper but you manage the procurement and carry the risk if items arrive damaged or missing.
Laminate worktops offer the best value for money at £30–£60/linear metre installed. Solid wood costs £80–£150/linear metre and needs regular oiling but can be sanded and repaired. Quartz is the most popular mid-to-high-end choice at £150–£300/linear metre — it's non-porous, heat resistant and very durable. Granite is similar in price to quartz but each slab is unique. For a family kitchen, quartz or solid wood offers the best balance of durability and aesthetics.
A standard kitchen renovation takes 1–2 weeks for fitting once all units are on site. A small galley kitchen can be done in 3–5 days. A large kitchen with island, tiling, and new plumbing can take 2–3 weeks. Kitchen lead times are often longer than the install — popular ranges from suppliers like Howdens or Wren have 2–6 week lead times. Budget 4–8 weeks from order to completed kitchen.
Yes — if your renovation involves moving or connecting a gas hob, gas oven, or gas supply pipes, the work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Kitchen fitters can do the carpentry and fitting work, but gas connections must be signed off by a Gas Safe engineer. Similarly, new kitchen circuits (oven circuit, extractor, dishwasher) must comply with Part P Building Regulations. Most kitchen fitters either hold these qualifications or work with sub-contractors who do.
Integrated appliances add £1,500–£5,000+ to your kitchen budget depending on specification. Budget integrated appliances (oven, hob, extractor, dishwasher, fridge-freezer) start around £1,500. Mid-range Bosch or Siemens packages cost £2,500–£4,000. Premium Neff or Miele appliances can add £5,000–£10,000+. Freestanding appliances are cheaper but look less seamless. Factor appliances into your budget early as they affect unit layout and electrical/plumbing specification.
