* Rates are typical market averages for 2026 based on industry survey data. Individual rates vary by experience, job type, and other factors.
Several factors determine how much a scaffolder will charge for a job.
Scaffolders must hold a CISRS (Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme) card. Operatives (Part 1/2) charge less than Advanced Scaffolders (NASC-approved) who can erect more complex structures.
Independent tied scaffold, birdcage, cantilever, and suspended scaffold all carry different risk premiums. Tube-and-fitting is slower and more expensive than system scaffold (Layher, Haki).
High-rise or complex structures require NASC membership and advanced certification, pushing day rates to £45–£68/hr. Confined spaces or over water carry additional risk premiums.
Scaffolding contractors charge separately for the scaffold tubes and fittings (weekly hire) and the labour to erect and dismantle. Day rates quoted by scaffolders usually cover labour only.
Emergency or overnight scaffold erection (for securing a building after storm damage, for example) can double the normal rate due to unsociable hours and short notice.

Yes. UK scaffolders must hold a valid CISRS (Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme) card. The main grades are Operative (Part 1 and 2), Scaffolder, Advanced Scaffolder, and Scaffolding Supervisor. Most commercial sites require Scaffolder level or above.
A typical domestic scaffold for a two-storey terraced house costs £800–£1,500 for a 2-week hire including erection and dismantling. Semi-detached houses with rear access cost £1,200–£2,500. The scaffolder's day rate is part of the erection/dismantling labour, not the hire charge.
An Advanced Scaffolder holds the CISRS Advanced Scaffolder card and can design and erect complex scaffold structures — cantilevers, bridges, birdcages, and structures over 4.5m clear span. They typically charge 20–40% more than a standard Scaffolder.
